Laurence Leblanc’s artist\u2019s object was designed around the series “D’ARGILE”. The series is the result of meticulous photographic work, focussed on small clay figurines modelled for a film by Rithy Panh bearing witness to the atrocities of the Cambodian genocide.<\/p>\n

The artist uses the principle of reversal of scale and seriality to turn these faces, smaller than a thumbnail, into real portraits. The 54 black and white prints incorporated in the object strangely resonate with the history of anthropometric photography, which the Khmer Rouge were able to exploit woefully for identification and repression.
\nHowever, to question the value of a unique and singular life in this widespread atrocity, Laurence Leblanc does not give in to the systematism that characterises mug shots and toys with a renewed photographic device. The appearance of a disproportionate human hand or the vision of two figurines seemingly supporting one another are all striking images that raise questions differently. Meaning always emerges from this dissonance with Laurence Leblanc.<\/p>\n

“D’ARGILE” is an artists\u2019 object created by Laurence Leblanc and Laurel Parker, with the support of Picto Foundation. The paper was chosen on the advice of Hahnem\u00fchle FineArt and is a series of 15 copies.
