Suba, Costa Azul

Suba, Costa Azul exists at the intersection of fashion and documentary, exploring what it means for Alejandra Loaiza to be Colombian, and how collective memory, cultural iconography, and everyday aesthetics shape identity.
Rooted in her childhood in a working-class neighborhood of Bogotá, the project draws from the streets and their inhabitants: the resilience of the community, the colors and textures of the urban environment, and the gestures and lifestyles that define daily life. These elements translate into clothing, hairstyles, and personal styles, where fashion becomes a tool of expression, a social language embedded in everyday life, and a marker of belonging.
The series highlights rites of passage such as quinceañeras and beauty rituals in local salons, while still lifes revisit Colombian iconography, showing how objects and visual signs contribute to identity construction and the transmission of cultural heritage.
Combining analog and digital photography, Suba, Costa Azul reflects her intimate relationship with the image and her desire to preserve tangible memories, even as some moments remain undocumented. Living far from Colombia, she pays tribute to her origins, creating images that connect memory, culture, identity, and fashion—transforming the latter into a meaningful visual language.
