PICTO LAB 2021 residency’s laureate: Baptiste Rabichon.

Baptiste Rabichon developed the 20th Century project as part of the Picto Lab/ Experimenting with images artist residency.

Baptiste Rabichon will develop the project XXth century as part of the PICTO LAB / Expérimenter l’image artist residency Picto Lab.

XXth century, echoing first of all one of the three photographic series that make up this proposal, titled respectively Manhattan Papers, Lost Levels, and XXth century.

XXth century, in reference to the themes explored; abstract painting, the general public’s discovery of cave art, notably with Lascaux and Chauvet, the city of New York and its image, the beginnings of digital technology and virtuality through the world of video games in the 90s …

XXth century, also in certain tools, techniques, and supports used; analog shots and prints, color reversal film, photograms, chemigrams, 8 and 16-bit video games, etc…

From shooting to digital collage, from decoration manufacturing to printing, from screenshot to chemigram, these are all different photographic aspects that Baptiste Rabichon will explore as part of the residency offered by Picto Foundation through these three series which will be articulated into a whole called XXth century.

Baptiste Rabichon’s candidacy is sponsored by the Gwinzegal Art Center, a member of the Diagonal network. The Gwinzegal team will be present alongside the artist during the creation and production phases and will contribute to the visibility given to the restitution as part of the Art Center’s program.

Baptiste Rabichon was born on 1987 in Montpellier.

A graduate of Beaux-Arts in Paris in 2014, Baptiste Rabichon lives and works in the capital. Winner of the BMW Prize for Photography in 2017, his work was recently exhibited at the Center of Contemporary Art of Nîmes, at the Rencontres d’Arles, and at the Lianzhou Museum of Photography in China.

For its first edition, the jury of the Picto Lab / Expérimenter l’image artist residency studied the proposals of 13 artists, each sponsored by a member of the Diagonal network with whom Picto Foundation is developing the program.

By choosing Baptiste Rabichon’s proposal, the jury wanted to highlight both the originality of his project and the precision of its complex experimental dimension. Baptiste Rabichon will be hosted for three months from April to June 2021 at the Cité Internationale des Arts to carry out his project as part of PICTO laboratories. Before and throughout his residency, he will also be supported by the Cité Internationale des Arts team, who will organize meeting times with other residents from all disciplines and with professionals from the art world.
Its restitution will be supported by Picto Foundation, the Diagonal network, LA Fab., agnès b. endowment fund, the Dream Big and Grow Fast Foundation, and the Gwinzegal Art Center which sponsored the candidacy of Baptiste Rabichon.
